Bitcoin wallet
Electrum
A fast Bitcoin wallet that holds your keys and talks to the network through Tor.
- License
- MIT
- Onion support
- Works with onion servers
- Reaches the network
- Only through the gateway's Tor
What it is for
A lightweight wallet that never downloads the whole blockchain. It asks servers for the data it needs, so how it reaches them matters, and Ombra sends all of it through Tor.
- 01Hold and spend Bitcoin with keys that never leave your device.
- 02Recover everything from a seed phrase, and use a hardware wallet if you have one.
- 03Build a transaction offline and sign it on a machine with no connection.
Why it helps your privacy
You hold the keys
Funds are controlled by a seed phrase on your side. There is no account and no custodian.
Servers cannot see your IP
A light wallet tells servers which addresses it watches. Over Tor, the server does not learn where you are.
Open and auditable
The wallet is open source and widely reviewed, and the seed is the only thing that has to be protected.
Hardware wallets
Signing can happen on a separate device, so the key never touches the desktop.
Onion services
Works with onion servers
Electrum can connect to servers published as onion services, which keeps the whole path inside Tor.
How it is set up in Ombra
- Proxy preset
- The wallet starts configured to use the gateway's SOCKS port, with update checks and crash reports turned off.
- Fails closed
- If it ever tried a direct connection, the desktop firewall would block it.
- Light-wallet exposure
- The servers you query see the addresses you watch, though not your IP. Use your own server if that matters to you.
